The Obligatory Philcon Post

I'm starting to feel that among my friends, My beloved and I are the only ones *not* to have a Philcon report post. Lucky for me she's got her own damn LJ, meaning she can talk about all the useful stuff.

I, on the other hand, will speak about the things you just shouldn't do, and on some of the things you should.

Do: Meet Voltaire. That guy is so damned awesome he kicks my lazy Target workin ass any day of the week.
Don't: Be a complete tool and accidentally fanboy the guy... or maybe I'm just self-conscious.

Do: Find something you enjoy and then do it. I actually think I like being able to throw information at people and then go freeload around the con for a few hours, but I'll let Suzanne do it. I'm gonna find something else to do and become the great freeloader of Philcon. Maybe I should become a Program Participant! Quick! Someone teach me something someone else gives enough of a shit about to hear me talk about it at a convention! Not porn!
Don't: Get hammered down into one spot too long. Too many of us have given our lives for the con. If it weren't for panels and the occasional glimpse of daylight they recieved, Tony and JL would probably still be in that film room.

Do: Take the time to talk to hughcasey. He does better voices than I do when telling stories. Add to that he has a *lot* more stories than I do by virtue of knowing EVERYONE. Ask him about how he met Jimmy Doohan, that's always my favorite.
Don't: Don't try to avoid hughcasey. You won't be able to anyway. Hell, thanks to Kevin Bacon and the 6 degrees, there's a high likelihood that you already do know him or that he knows you. He's this great big teddybear of a guy who has so many friends and somehow manages to devote time to some of them all of the time, or is it all of them some of the time... I never could figure that one out.

Do: Post to PhillyGeek. I really don't check this LJ much because I tend to forget about it a lot, but I get Phillygeek emails every day!
Don't: Be Kristen Battestella. I'm not interested in that damn book and even less interested now that she has spammed that damn board with it and not provided any content that proves she isn't a bot.

Do: And I'm going to regret saying this... but Do go to the SFWA party at Philcon. Oz provides free booze. Oz, once drugged up on painkillers and said booze is actually pretty good company. (I don't normally care for Oz, and I don't even register on his radar of people to really dislike, so we don't exactly get along most times)
Don't: Let friends get drunk off their ass at the SFWA party. We outpartied Voltaire, man... and we won't talk about how autumnyte and titaniumjunky attempted to step on something in the hallway at the same time and both fell down... oops, too late.

Do: Make friends at Philcon. Sure some of them are socially awkward, and a few can be a little Aspie at times. But I guarantee there are people there that you'll like and will like you. Hell, maybe even people who like you *that way*. I have a gang of friends who we congregate around every year. radiofreerlyeh tends to feel like he's holding court, and he's gonna hate me fore saying this, but he and his wife are a center for us. He's one of those people that we know we can come to and all of the rest of our friends will be there. He's one of those folks who always sticks out his hand for those of use who may be a little socially awkward and feeds them to the rest of the wolves and makes them feel like they're part of the clan. I swear he's collecting women. I fear when he gets the whole set and becomes SuperMechaTony.
Don't: Let Super MechaTony lose on the streets of Tokyo... I have a feeling it will go badly for all of us once he finds the nuclear power plants...

Do: Find an excuse to come to Philcon. A lot of really great people came together to make something that even grendelsden liked. He's a hard critic to appease, and one of my best gauges on how things went each year.
Don't: Violate the new Philcon handbook which will say at the end of every job description (especially sleepers) that you must be wearing clothing during the convention. You wouldn't think this needs to be written, but everyone has heard about it at least tangentially so far.

Learning by doing

There are two types of learning, really. Those who can learn by reading, and those who learn by doing...

I have learned Hugh is the chatty cathy of the interwebs.

I have learned how to make it so that my inbox is not filled to the brim with LJ replies.

I have learned that packing sucks and that's why we should hire people to do it for us.

I have learned I own far too many gaming books, but still not as much as most of my friends, who simply have the luxury of having more time to collect them. Ya know... cuz they're old. :)

I have learned I have an MMO addiction, but thank god it's not Second Life. *I* can still go out on friday nights even if the grid is up and running. ;)

I have learned that porn salesmanship has a poor effect on the human psyche.

I have learned I can count on people to help me move shit that has no business being in someone's home, like 47 lbs. of comic books. (Guess which box Vinnie gets to carry?)

I have learned I am in dire need of useful employment, since I created a livejournal for amusement value.

I have learned we have far too many ways to express our *mood*. When I have to go through an alphabetical laundry list of emotions that I could possibly wish to convey, I think we have become far too human. I'd say emo, but everyone knows emokids only have gloomy, depressed, or /me "Slashes wrists for attention".

I have learned when to stop. See? I'm doing it right now.
